It’s the last day of 2013 and I’ve been sitting with the question of what I actually want to do differently in 2014. Not what I should do, not what sounds good on a vision board, but what I genuinely want to change about how I spend my time.
I’ve made lists before. Five resolutions, ten resolutions, the whole lot. Write more, exercise more, read more, save more, learn a language, cut out social media, meditate every morning. By February I’d abandoned at least eight of them, and the ones I kept were half-hearted at best. The problem was never discipline. It was that I was trying to change everything at once, which is just a fancy way of saying I wasn’t going to change anything at all.
So this year I’m doing one thing.
Blog more often
That’s it. One resolution. Write here more often.
I’ve had this blog for years and it’s become a graveyard of half-finished tutorials and one-off problem solutions. There’s nothing wrong with that, honestly, but I’ve been thinking about what I actually want this space to be. Not a portfolio, not a documentation dump, but somewhere I can work through ideas properly. The kind of place where I can take a thought that’s been bouncing around my head for weeks and finally give it structure, even if nobody reads it.
I think the barrier has always been the blank page. Not a lack of things to say, but the pressure of saying something worth saying. Every post feels like it needs to be useful, or clever, or at least coherent. So I don’t write. And then another month passes and the gap feels too big to close.
What if I just wrote? Not for an audience, not for clout, not even for myself in some enlightened sense. Just because the act of putting words on a page tends to sort the thinking out whether I feel ready or not. Some of the best ideas I’ve had came after I’d already started writing and hadn’t planned where they were going.
I don’t have a target. No “three posts a week” or “daily writing”. I’m just going to write when I have something to say and stop making excuses when I don’t. If that means a post every two weeks, fine. If it means three in a month and then silence for a quarter, also fine. The resolution isn’t about output. It’s about removing the friction that’s kept me from writing for too long.
That’s all. One thing. Let’s see what happens.
